Burma, the Union of Burma in long form or Myanmar and the Union of Myanmar (name used by the UN), is a country of Asia of the Southeast with a common border with India, Bangladesh, Laos, China and the Thailand. It is edged by the sea of Andaman in the south and by the Bay of Bengal. in the southwest, representing about 2.000 kilometres of coasts in total. Democratic opposition prefers using the name of Burma to refer to democratic period, while the military junta in power succeeded in imposing the name Myanmar (literally " marvellous country ") what allows a break with the ancient period and unsettles the action of organizations favourable to democracy. The country was aimed of an iron hand by the military junta, conducted by the general Not Win from 1962 till 1988, then a short democratic intermezzo was fast stifled from 1992, by the general Than Shwe.

Myanmar should follow "classical" procedure and to transmit samples in a reference laboratory to confirm the discovery of H5N1. Authorities transmitted their report on Monday in the FAO and in the GOOSE, the worldwide organization of animal health which is in Paris.

The worldwide Organization of Health (WHO) enumerated 176 persons infected by the bird flu in the world, among which 97 deceases since the beginning of epizootic in 2003. However these figures do not include another ten deceases which happened in Azerbaïdjan and that are under way of analysis in the reference laboratory of the GOOSE for influenza bird flu and the illness of New Castle in Padoue in Italy.
