Bird flu Africa Cameroon reports first case of H5N1

AFRICA - Cameroon reports first case of H5N1 bird flu, the virus advances in Africa and touches Cameroon. Cameroon is the fourth Africain country touched by the virus H5N1 of the bird flu. This news confirms the fears of the experts facing quick expansion the epizootic of bird flu in Africa. The virus H5N1 of the bird flu was discerned at a duck of animal husbandry in the province of the Extreme north of Cameroon. Cameroon becomes so the fourth Africain country where the virus was disclosed at fowls. Maroua, the affected Cameroonian city is in 1.200 km north of Yaoundé. Maroua is the county seat of this border province of Nigeria and Chad.

After Nigeria, Egypt and Niger, the first three countries of Africa where the discovery of the lethal virus was announced last month, illness was discerned at a duck of animal husbandry in the extreme north of Cameroon. The international experts think that Africa, through lack of facilities, skilled personnels and means, is fast in trouble going to be facing this threat. The most part of the Africain countries took measures of restrictions of the importation of fowl, but the application of these measures seems difficult to implement on the ground to slow down the progress of epizootic.

Cameroon has a shared border of 1.800 km with Nigeria. Cameroonian authorities had forbidden any importation of Nigerian fowl after the announcement February 8th of the discovery of H5N1 in this country, first Africain home of the bird flu. These measures did not prevent the virus from arriving on the territory.

In a press release, the Cameroonian government declares that « the results of analysis of performed samples, at its request, by the Institute Pastor of Paris on some fowl of the city of Maroua revealed, in a case, this day, March 11th, 2006, the presence of the virus H5N1 of the bird flu in the considered zone ».
